I’ve been seeing on a couple of different anti-gay websites that supposedly Obama uses the Sermon on the Mount to support gay marriage. Mark at Chesterstreet copies something that Tony Perkins at the Family Research Council writes (Obama: Sermon on the Mount Supports Same-sex Unions

Tony Perkins writes (and Mark must agree since he took the time to copy it into his own blog):

Jesus teaches on a number of issues central to the Christian life in the Sermon on the Mount: being witnesses to the world, loving our enemies, honoring marriage - but there is no instruction on same-sex unions.

Stacy Harp writes: Obama Believes the Sermon on the Mount Justifies Gay Marriage

Yup, you read that right. The media messiah himself (that would be Obama) actually has read someplace in the Holy Scriptures that when Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount that someplace in there that Jesus was advocating for same gender sexual relationships.

You can find the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 - 7 and Luke 6, so if you can find somewhere in there that same gender sexual relationships are mentioned and advocated, please leave it in the comments for me, because I don’t see it. I wonder if Obama thinks before he says these things, or if he just thinks others are as ignorant of the bible as he apparently is.

The ex-gay DL Foster writes:

True to form, Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama continues to reveal his disdain –and bleak ignorance– for scripture, the Bible and sexual morality, by telling a college group in Ohio that THE most significant and comprehensive scriptural text condemning homosexuality in both men and women is an “obscure passage”. “I don’t think it [a same-sex union] should be called marriage, but I think that it is a legal right that they should have that is recognized by the state,” said Obama. “If people find that controversial then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans.” ((Hear audio from WTAP-TV)

Now I won’t comment how DL Foster bolds Obama’s name and includes his middle name, but at least he doesn’t repeat what Tony Perkins, Mark and Stacy seem to have swallowed whole without actually understanding what Obama said.

So there you have it. Now I don’t think these three people are stupid. Far from it. However, is there just some common sense missing with what these people are saying? It doesn’t take a 2 year old (thanks DL for that snappy phrase!) to understand that Obama is trying to get people to read the Sermon on the Mount to get a sense of what Christianity is all about and what the message of Christ is instead of reading the condemnations of Paul in Romans. That is it. Obama is not suggesting that Christ justifies gay marriage in the Sermon on the Mount.

Again, he is telling people to read the Sermon on the Mount if they want to understand the message of Christ. And here it is (the Sermon on the Mount):

5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.5:4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.5:5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.5:7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.5:10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.5:11 “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

Christ’s message here is certainly more important to Christians and should be their focus instead of the obscure passage at the end of the first chapter of Romans. There is no condemnation in the Sermon on the Mount (and notice 5:9, all you anti-gay activists–it wouldn’t hurt to think about that sentence). That is the point. Now will those who spread this rot take back what they said? I won’t hold my breath…
