A few months back, Randy Thomas bragged on his blog about how he and other Exodus members took out a full page ad in the papers trying to fight Federal Hate Crime protections for the gay and lesbian population. Their claim was that it treated gays "special" and made them more "important". These claims are of course, unfounded since we all know it is not about being gay or lesbian, it is about being perceived as gay or lesbians. I remind anyone, you are one step away from being the victim of a hate crime. They just have to think you are gay!
Their ad campaign claimed that people are more valuable as gay then ex-gay. The logic would also say Christians are more valuable than ex-christians. Since religion is protected under Federal Hate crime laws, being gay is not. Thus showing their hypocrisy even more. Do you think they will admit to this. Nope, they just see another chance to dehumanize gays, and they take it.
Where is Randy Thomas now in the wake of the violent shootings in New Bedford, Mass. Where is Stephen Bennett who also had a recent show fighting hate crime laws for gays and lesbians? Where is DL Foster, who also speaks out against hate crime protections for gays and lesbians? Where are the statements to the press from these people, where is Exodus International? Where is the compassion from these groups for the victims, for the families, and even the now deceased assailant?
When will these groups understand the damage they do. By saying that it is NOT okay to have Federal Protections against hate crimes for gays and lesbians, you are also saying it is okay to commit these crimes, now that 3 people are dead, 3 people are critically injured, 100’s traumatized and a community in turmoil, all do to the hate, the dehumanzing, and anti-gay speech of these same people. I ask again, were are they now? I haven’t seen even one of them make a public statement. It appears they do these ads to denounce the need for hate crime protections, but run and hide when things come along to prove them wrong.
The Southern Poverty Law Center released a report in the winter of 2005 that explained how gays and lesbians are victimized at 6 times the overall rate. According to the report, hate crimes involve violence far more often than other crimes. The data showed 84 percent of hate crimes were violent, meaning they involved a sexual attack, robbery, assault or murder. By contrast, just 23 percent of non-hate crimes involved violence. Other studies have suggested that hate-motivated violence, especially against homosexuals, is more extreme than other violence.
So I will ask again, where is Randy Thomas now? Where is DL Foster now? I don’t see them jumping to admit they are wrong. Why is that?
